Enter the Santa Ho Ho No

The last week before Secret Satan brings us two Santa focused features. First up we visit Santa's Summer House, a summer refuge for Jolly Ol' St. Nick to shed the pounds and get his greepy on, where seething resentment and crumbling unions and croquet is the normal order of the day. Then we get abducted along with a couple of meddling kids and taken to Mars to witness the bloody, horrific, savage battles as Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

Also Dave rants about the three other FF features, Tyler almost dies from Kevin's machinations, and Craig returns to try and finish him off.

Then we take a trip to the gold laden Mexican hills with three guys in search of their fortunes. Does The Treasure of the Sierra Madre or is it really a statement about humanity?

After a hectic month with the October Horror Challenge, we finally settle back into the normal flow. This week Dave unleashes Paradise, a Canadian Blue Lagoon rip off. Will any of us ever look at the wonderful Phoebe Cates the same again? Is Willie Aames really the worst protagonist we have seen? Kevin counters with the cult classic Australian and Hong Kong co-production The Man from Hong Kong. A Bond, a lot of civilian casualties and the second most obnoxious lead we have ever had to endure.
All that and a digression into 007, how we ended our OHCs, and the genesis of Kevin's passion for goth girls is revealed to be the same place Craig and T's passion for the Divine Miss M.

Next our youngest forsaken bloodbath, The Tripper, tells us about early 2000s politics and why Thomas Jane should have a statue in every major world city. Finally, we hear the sad tale of Eric Binford's decent in to a madness that the general public expects from every open horror fan, that consuming Fade to Black.

Next we dip our toes into New Wave British horror with Norman J Warren's serial killer lesbians vs people-eating cat alien romp Prey... a movie Dave is certain is packed with meaning that he just didn't pick up on. That is followed by Borg on a Russian boat movie, Virus, an old favorite of Tyler's... which may or may not cause everyone else great pain. Finally we take a look at one of John Carpenter's many cult classics, Prince of Darkness. All that and Kevin keeps his extra watches classy and mocks the rest of us for wallowing in cinematic sewage runoff.

Ah, bel paese. Raiders takes a tour of Italian Horror to kick off October. Our first film's shadow is longer than it's runtime and who hasn't wondered what their neighbor tastes like? Find out as we picnic at a Cannibal Holocaust. We get picked up by Umberto Lenzi and see the sites through his Eyeball. Lucio Fulci slips some LSD in our ginger beers and in a dream London we meet A Lizard in a Woman's Skin. Finally we wake up hungover, exhausted, and covered with bright orange blood in Buffalora cemetery and meet the Cemetery Man who insists we call him Dellamorte Dellamore.

We take on the Klan with a trio of Vets somewhere in the South and join the Brotherhood of Death . William Sanderson takes us and a nice preacher's family hostage as we Fight for Your Life. After that we head to a San Francisco antique dealer, Blacula, to see some new acquisitions from Transylvania. Finally we make it to the mean streets of New York to take in a Curtis Mayfield show and get to be truly Super Fly.

It's a tale of New York in the summer, a tale of love and drugs and other stuff that makes Tyler's heart skip a few beats. Then we hitch a ride in a surprisingly spacious perambulator through Edo Period Japan and gaze adoringly on the stern visage of Ogami Itto as he cuts a bloody swath over the countryside in Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance.

Exiles

On this episode of RotP we talk a hard look at two movies from auteurs of differing pedigrees. First we gathered to hear the tale of  Perry Hall, Maryland rogue filmmaker, underground comix author, and publisher Don Dohler's Nightbeast, a remake-and-sequel-of-sorts to Dohler's more notorious offering The Alien Factor.  Then we take out second trip through the mind fields of Wes Anderson and get stranded on Isle of Dogs.

All that and we stood tall in a mighty fight against Skype's shenanigans... and lost. So please forgive the iffy moments of audio and we will try to return to our normal low level of quality next week. Probably.

This week we take a four film trip to the magical land of cake, whisky, stuffed sheep stomach, meaningful plaids, lochs, and legends. Scotland, home of bagpipes, 70s band Nazareth, and our very own kilted Kevin, gets its due with an intensely unfocused look. Finally! First we sit at the feet of a young Maggie Smith and hear her whimsical praises for Franco and Mussolini, as we witness The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Next we take a cue from fairly recent politics and try to heavily exploit the North Sea Oil beyond any reasonable expectation but are thwarted by a Local Hero. Still desperate for cash, we find a new inspiration with the Clown and the Wolfman and take up mugging Restless Natives. Finally, after so much time in the lovely country the gave the world Danny Boyle, we run afoul of some yuppies and stumble upon a Shallow Grave.

After several weeks of being too nice to Tyler in our viewing choices... a power move is pulled and we watch Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, the 1978 cult classic, that is guaranteed to cause him pain. In a brilliant counter, Tyler makes the rest of us watch Anatomy of Hell, Catherine Breillat's 2004 arthouse erotic thriller... I guess "thriller" works. I'm not sure what other handy and easy to convey genre label I could use.

Cults, Cuts, and a Singer Gone Nuts

In this episode we are joined by a Very Special Guest, unlike our previous guests who were all hitchhikers we found off various backroads off I-70. First up we take a long hard fake documentary style look at Charlie and the Manson Bunch in Jim Van Bebber's 16-year long passion project that is filled with some amazing talent, regardless of how you feel about the film as a whole, The Manson Family. 
After that we take a weekend holiday in Spain at at the luxurious villa clinic of Antonio Banderas... I mean, Doctor Robert Ledgard and his not at all, uh, unique, yeah let's go with that, relationship with body stocking enthusiast Vera to feel better about The Skin I Live In. ***WARNING! THERE ARE HEAVY SPOILERS FOR THE SKIN I LIVE IN*** There is a handy warning in the episode itself and a nice idea of where those spoilers end. Because if you have ANY interest, you really should go into it as blind as possible. 
Arriving back just in time to drop our guest at their date with The Phantom of the Paradise, Brian De Palma's 1974 glam rock musical tale of Faustian deals, Paul Williams songs and the consequences of improper record press machinery procedure.

This week we finish off the original Angel series as Molly finds herself back in LA and bringing closure to one of the bigger questions of the High School Hollywood Hooker's saga. Tragically, it opens up even more questions that we will ponder until Death's sweet embrace. Thanks, Angel 3: The Final Chapter (until Angel 4: Undercover). Then we visit one of the most high drama colleges back East to learn the Rules of Attraction, the most direct adaptation of a Bret Easton Ellis book ever conceived. To our despair, the school store was out of Camden College hoodies.
Also Craig loses time in his puppy dungeon, we have to bring in a ringer, and GET HYPED for next week's very special guest. She's going to read to us very slowly and we might all finally understand what's going on.

Surreal Sci-Fi

This week RotP takes a swim in the Big Cauliflower money bin with films insidiously disguised as surreal science fiction. For an antipasto we nibble Tarkovsky's epic about a casual walk to a room full of cauliflower, Stalker. Followed by a light serving of Zardoz, in the distant future mankind has fractured into the barbaric mortal Brutals and the civilized immortal Eternals thanks to an advanced AI, cloning vats, magic, books and the vitamins found in multiple daily servings of cauliflower. For the main course we indulge in the animated French allegory of racism, human rights, and animal right, Fantastic Planet, where everything is made of cauliflower, including their giant sex statues. Finally we finish the gluttony session up with Under the Skin, a movie about a beautiful alien who captures horny men in a van driven used to deliver everyone's favorite white fleshed veggie to Tescos across Edinburgh.

All that as well as Dave has a love-hate relationship with Godzilla, Craig waxes lyrical about his hopes for the future of the Fast and Furious series, Kevin remembers his Mom and Dad, and Tyler makes threats.

This week we discuss two classics from the 1980s. Spike Lee's 1989  masterpiece Do the Right Thing and 1988's evil cat on a boat movie Uninvited. One is a timeless hard look at American race relations and the other has a cat on a boat. One has an incredible performance from Danny Aiello, the other an incredible fight between George Kennedy and a rubber glove. One is set during a heat wave in the Big Apple, the other on a boat off the coast of Florida. You can see why we would pair these two films together.

In Stuart Gordon's King of the Ants he tries his hand at being a greasy drunk crime boss and, in Christopher Guest's 1993 remake of the camp cult classic Attack of the 50ft Woman, he makes an attempt at being a greasy philandering husband who might also be drunk a few times. Second youngest and meltiest looking brother William gets his chance to wow us with Philip Noyce's Sharon Stone led erotic thriller based on an Ira Levin novel, Sliver. Finally baby brother Stephen gets his moment to shine in a movie about the lust boiling in a single college dorm suite in Threesome.

The we rest and recuperate in a nice old timey hospital as a broken stuntman tries to con a kid into helping him kill himself, as Tarsem Singh giggles to himself in a corner and pushes us towards The Fall.

Learning our skills just aren't up to standards, we decide to stowaway on a leisurely cruise with a pair of showgirls and the US men's gymnastics team learn it's true that Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Fortunately, after being thrown overboard, we are picked up by some horney Donkey Punch-ing college kids who just don't have the self awareness they seem to be trying to comment on.

Richard Pryor, in a rare dramatic role, teams with Harvey Keitel and Yaphet Kotto to stick it to the man, their exploitative union, and face the consequences in Paul Schrader's directorial debut Blue Collar. Finally we take a viewer chosen stop in South Korea, thanks to Simon, to see Ok-bin Kim take a star making turn in Byung-gil Jung's frenetic action thriller The Villainess.
