Bawlmer's Second Favorite Son

This week we finally pat tribute to the Pope of Filth, the Paterfamilias of Transgressive Cinema, the Prince of Puke, Baltimore's Second Favorite Son... John Waters. We kick things off with a look at his precursor to Punk Culture and the start of the Trash Trilogy, Pink Flamingos. It's a film some of us have long embraced, newcomers should be sure to cook themselves a hearty meal of eggs before viewing the party scene to properly enjoy along with the characters. In a futile effort to impose an idea of class on the proceedings we jump forward to the more mainstream but no less great period of his career that ran through the 1980s and 90s to take jury seats for the trial of Serial Mom. Kathleen Turner shows that she is a powerhouse with a wonderful supporting cast and razor sharp script. Being pulled back to his early works by the powerful charisma of Divine, we then discuss Female Trouble, a film that might be one of Waters' most topical films still. Finally we end with his final film A Dirty Shame, which is the most aptly titled film anyone has ever made.

Hurricane Shogun

First we take a ride on some gnarly winds with the droid someone wants, get chased by a psychotic bounty hunter, and witness a producer go bankrupt. I'm sure there's a metaphor or life lesson somewhere in Slipstream. Then we land in New Zealand to revel in some nostalgic soaked coming of age shenanigans with a shogun and Boy.

This week we take another trip to Serbia and learn how to bowl like a professional. First up we thumb a ride in the most distinctive bus in Europe, see some snuff up close, and witness The Life and Death of a Porno Gang. Then we take a break to find zen in an abduction scheme before the league semifinals with The Big Lebowski. One endlessly quotable film and one about how absolutely awful life is. Who thought we'd find so much in a Serbian shock film or the Coens would make us so damn depressed? Might have that reversed.

Amphibian Blackjack A-Go-Go

This week we take our chances going against ninjas, the mob, and an interestingly themed New York gang. First we take a look back at the wild days of Los Vegas with Casino, the only movie where De Niro doesn't play a good Catholic boy. Pesci is still Pesci, as that holds the Universe together. Next we take a tour of NYC's sewer system with a group of Muppets and a De Niro impersonator to learn the secret arts of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Finally we emerge into gloriously campy beacon of hope that is the Village People who are THE Sound of the 80s... because they Can't Stop the Music.
All that and a Mystery Guest, Tyler weeps, Craig is forced to take a hard look at his life, Kevin tries to make many parable comparisons, and Dave realizes he is the most secure in his sexuality.

Episode 87- Amphibian Blackjack A-Go-Go

To conclude Japanuary we dive into four films curated by Nathan (who was unable to join us due to Ninjas). First up is Noburo Ando's Chronicle of Escape and Sex (aka Account of Filthy Escape into Sex aka the greatest title we have ever seen) a true account of lead actor Ando's month long run from authorities and the women who comforted him. Okinawa Yakuza War, also inspired by a true crime event, finally brings the great Sonny Chiba to RotP. Fires on the Plain shoves our faces into the horrors of war. Finally Takashi Miike arrives on scene, you just can't have Japanuary without him, and spins another tale from the files of Noburo Ando, one we assume must be heavily fictionalized or else the force ghosts have a lot to answer to, in Deadly Outlaw Rekka.

New Tokyo, Same Old T

The penultimate week of Japanuary 2019. First, Tyler proves an old pervert can not change his crusty tighty whities with the in name only sequel New Tokyo Decadence: The Slave. The 2007 softcore Japanese BDSM film where a boring girl meets a boring master. It's not at all what you think it is... it's much much less. Then Craig bring the brilliant ray of sunshine that is Beat Kitano into our lives with Boiling Point. Some guys, some baseball, some violence, and Kitano. What more could anyone possibly need?
Also we learn new things about Kevin's romantic history and Dave remains comparably calm about everything.

Episode 85- New Tokyo, Same Old T

Mesmer in the River

Japanuary continues with two solid contenders. Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure takes a look at hypnosis, murder, and a very pointed social commentary that escaped at least one of us. Then we take a look at our second Lone Wolf and Cub film with the fifth entry in the series in a lazy attempt to trigger Kevin's film sequence compulsive disorder, Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in the Land of the Demons. Also Dave enjoys porn free breathing room, Craig tries to swallow his pain, and Tyler plots deeds too unspeakable to type. All that and a whole lot of regretful name mangling.
